Pont Y Werin Cycle Ride

A free, family cycling event will take place on the newly opened Pont y Werin bridge this weekend.

On Sunday, September 26 cyclists’s can follow the brand new Bay Trail and take in the sights that Cardiff has to offer.

The event has been organised by the charity Sustrans in cooperation with Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and will start at 10.30am from the Oystercatcher car park, Penarth Marina, near Cogan railway station.

The ride  will be the first time the newly opened Pont y Werin bridge has been used for a cycle event and will provide the opportunity for many bike users to cross the bridge that links the Cardiff International Sports Village with Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan for the first time.

The cycle ride is suitable for the whole family and will be a gentle six mile ride

Executive Member for Highways and Transport, Cllr Delme Bowen, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Pont y Werin bridge being used in this way. I was lucky enough to be on the Pont y Werin steering group and have seen the bridge come to life from an initial idea to finally being used by members of the public.

“I hope this inaugural fun cycle event will be the first of many and I hope everyone taking part has a great day.”

Vinny Mott from Sustrans said “This fun and sociable ride is for anyone who wants to see the Bay by bike, whether you’re an experienced or new cyclist.  Get to know this scenic route in a relaxed atmosphere and be inspired to explore by bike again”

Those interested in joining in the ride should register by sending an email, quoting ‘Bay Trail ride’, to [email protected] with details of how many cyclists will be in your group.
