The unique performer is the UK’s only mountaineer turned stand-up comedian and his hilarious show provides laughs and thrills in equal measure. Often described as “a bit like Peter Kay meets Touching The Void,” Andy’s awe-inspiring stand up routine is an intoxicating mix of side-splitting humour and stomach churning fear!
Andy is one of the UK’s most daring and accomplished climbers, but he is also renowned for his own brand of northern humour. As comfortable on stage as he is lashed to an ice-clad mountain in a 100mph storm, his crazy adventures are told with a heady mix of observational comedy and self-deprecation, and illustrated with some stunning audio visuals.
Like most climbers Andy began talking about his trips around the tables of pubs and mountain bars, keeping friends entertained as they waited for storms to pass, whilst psyching themselves up for climbs to come. When Andy first started climbing it was all about the joyful selfish pleasure of it all, the terror of dangerous places, and the thrill of making it back home again – the only proof it really happened a bag of undeveloped film, and a brain buzzing with stories to tell his mates. When someone suggested that he should try stand-up, before long he began to find the excitement of passing on the things he’d seen on his expeditions almost as thrilling as the climbs themselves – and sometimes just as terrifying! In his past shows Andy searched for an answer to his perpetual quest for adventure. ‘Off The Wall’ is his third attempt to answer the reason why he climbs. He charts the last two years of his life with a collection of stories, including climbing the mighty El Capitan in Yosemite with injured serviceman Major Phil Packer, a dramatic rescue from the North Face of the Eiger, a near drowning at Cape Wrath and a trip to Number 10.
