Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales Central Chris Franks has written to Welsh Ministers following a survey that found that medical students at Cardiff are the least satisfied with their course, according to the findings of the National Student Survey.
Only 58% of students are satisfied with the overall quality of their course compared to an average of 82% across the UK.
The regional AM who represents the whole of Cardiff said:
“I have raised the lack of satisfaction found amongst Cardiff medical students with Welsh Ministers. While many budding medics are satisfied with the quality of teaching, there are concerns regarding feedback on assessments, and the management and organisation of the course. Only 20% feel that the course is well managed and running smoothly.
“I have written to Education Minister Leighton Andrews and Health Minister Edwina Hart for them to investigate. Many of the students will stay in Wales once they have done their training so it is important we continue to ensure excellence in their training.
“Before Plaid entered government in 2007, Cardiff was the only place you could study medicine in Wales. However as Swansea is the only other city where it is possible at the moment, it is important we get things right in Cardiff for the future of the students and the Welsh NHS.”
