National Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar says the views of local traders and residents must be respected as hundreds sign a petition against the building of a new supermarket in Somerton, Newport.
The Shadow Minister for Equality has regularly voiced concern over the impact that high numbers of supermarkets have on the future survival of local shops.
Over 500 signatures have been collected in opposition to new Tesco plans to turn the former Black Horse Inn public house into a Tesco Express supermarket store. Such a proposal was rejected last year following local objections.
Mr Asghar said: “It is worrying to think of the severe impact that the opening of the superstore could have on long-established local traders.
“The views of local residents and traders must be considered with regards to this plan”.
Earlier this year, in a letter printed in the South Wales Argus, Mr Asghar said: “Supermarkets are often very convenient and create jobs – but people should not forget the contribution that small shops and traders make to our community; often providing first-class produce and a personal service. I urge people to remember their local shops and the service they provide our communities and the diversity they offer our society”.
