A group of Cardiff schoolchildren have teamed up with students from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) to try their hand at event management.
The group of 11 pupils from Cantonian High School completed event management training at UWIC before being given the task of organising this year’s Youth University Awards evening.
The Youth University is a division of the Children’s University, an accreditation scheme that recognises and celebrates the out of school hours learning that young people participate in.
Candidates collect credits by attending a variety of extra curricular activities organised by youth groups, leisure centres and schools.
The credits accumulate and once the individual reaches a benchmark amount they achieve bronze, silver and gold awards. These can be used in their portfolios and as evidence for university and job applications.
Activities can be anything ranging from arts, drama and sports to IT, music and scouts with one hour of activity being worth one credit.
The event, which takes place at Cardiff City Stadium this Thursday (October 14), is to celebrate the initiative and recognise those who have achieved bronze, silver and gold awards.
Over 150 pupils and their families are invited to the event which kicks off with drinks and canapés followed by an evening of entertainment.
The team of Year 11 students from Cantonian were assisted by teacher Karen Edge.
They have had complete control over the event and have worked hard to secure some fantastic acts and special guests for the evening such as Sky One’s ‘Must Be the Music’ semi-finalists Flow Dem Crew and X-Factor auditionee Tom Richards.
Cardiff City players Chris Burke and Gavin Rae will also attend to present the award winners with their certificates.
Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “The Children’s University is a positive scheme which encourages young people to participate in additional learning out of school hours. It is important to recognise the benefit of learning in diverse contexts and this event is a wonderful way to celebrate those excelling in the scheme.
“We should also mention the fantastic level of enthusiasm and dedication of those pupils who have made the awards evening possible and I wish it every success”.
