Patients to benefit as nurses study through the medium of Welsh

Bilingual student nurses at the University of Glamorgan are benefiting from the availability of provision in Welsh, with trainees able to gain additional professional capability through the language.  The aim of the initiative is to enable nurses to provide a high standard of care to patients in their preferred language, and be confident in delivering professional services bilingually.

University of Glamorgan lecturer Owena Simpson said:  “In an increasingly multilingual environment, the NHS is making substantial steps towards providing services in the first language of its patients.  We are delighted to work with this trend by starting to offer Welsh-medium provision to our nursing students.  It complements work being done across other areas of the university.”

Third-year nursing student Elena Williams, from Aberdare, said:  “Like many bilingual student nurses it’s important that we are able to practice our vocation through both languages, and this course will give people like me that option.  This will equip students with extra skills to do their job on a hospital ward in the future.”
