The road leading to the Cardiff City Stadium is set to be named after the Bluebirds’ most iconic footballer, Fred Keenor, following an appeal from Plaid Cymru councillor Neil McEvoy.
The road to be known as Ffordd Fred Keenor (Fred Keenor Way in English) leads directly to the site of the proposed statue of the captain of the Cardiff City team which won the FA Cup in 1927, the only time the famous trophy has been taken out of England.
Councillor Neil McEvoy, Deputy Leader of Cardiff council and a Bluebirds fan, said: “What better name for the road to the new stadium than one which acknowledges a true Cardiff legend.
“And, it is great that the road also leads up to the site opposite Gate 3 where the statue of Fred will be erected following a public fundraising campaign. We have been looking at possible names for roads in this area for some time and Ffordd Fred Keenor is perfect for the link from Leckwith Road to the stadium entrance.
“I’m sure Cardiff City fans will welcome this proposal. Like many City fans, I don’t believe that he and the rest of the 1927 winning team have ever had proper recognition of their achievement in Cardiff. Fred is an iconic figure who returned to football after being injured in the Battle of the Somme and went on to captain his home town club and also his country to great success.”
Councillor McEvoy said that consultations were currently taking place on the naming of the road but he was sure there would be full support.
