Proceeds of crime funds “Justice in a Day” for Flintshire schools

Justice In A Day is a project which uses professional drama to examine key issues in crime and the criminal justice system for Year 9 and 10 students from eleven local secondary schools.

It is a joint initiative between the Community Trust and neighbourhood policing teams, Clwyd Theatr Cymru and local schools which have come together to offer an interactive day for young people aged 13-15 looking at justice issues relevant to young people and communities.

Each school will spend a day at the theatre using a specially created drama for an exploration of the impact of a crime and its resolution through the court and probation systems.

The session then moves to Mold Crown Court for a meeting with magistrates and a discussion of the long term impact of crime on perpetrators and victims.

The workshop led by Emyr John, a Drama Outreach Worker in the Education Department at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, follows a character called Alex from before he committed a crime to his trial, imprisonment and the consequences for his family and friends and the victim. It is performed by professional actors Richard Shackley and Claire Barron.

Clwyd Theatr Cymru is working with the police to encourage good citizenship in a scheme which, it is envisaged, will be extended to include schools throughout North Wales.

Justice In A Day has been made possible by funding from the Criminal Justice Board Community Cashback scheme which receives the proceeds of crime and uses them to re-invest in the community.
