Record Numbers for Leisure Centre

Membership at Pontardawe Leisure Centre is at an all time high following the opening of the newly extended and refurbished gym extension.

The Leisure centre has welcomed its 1001st member, which is nearly a 25% increase in a year.  Pontardawe is one of three Celtic Community Leisure managed centres across the county borough to be extended and refurbished in response to the increased activity and demand following the fire at the Afan Lido.

Neath Leisure Centre in Dyfed Road has also been upgraded with Neath Sports Centre in Court Herbert following soon.

Members are certainly getting value for their membership with more than 70,000 visits during the first six months of this year.  Of this, more than 14,000 children under 16 took part in various exercise sessions.

Councillor Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “It’s great to see everyone in the community using and getting great benefit from these fantastic facilities.  The health and wellbeing of everyone in our communities is very important and I would encourage the public to come and enjoy what’s on offer here.”

The new development in Pontardawe sees a significant increase in the size of the facility enabling the extension and improvement in the quality of the Cardio Vascular, Resistance and Free Weights Gyms.

In addition to the extension itself  a ‘Cardio-Theatre’ style TV Entertainment and anew music system has been introduced for members to further enjoy their sessions.

Councillor Mike James, Chairman of Celtic Community Leisure said: “It’s wonderful to reach 1,000 members.  In 2008 our Membership stood at 687 and this time last year it was 838. To go over the 1,000 mark is a terrific achievement by all the staff and I’m very proud of the hard work everyone  put in to reach this target.”

Duncan Kerr, Managing Director of Celtic Community Leisure said:

“This new development will bring additional exercise opportunities to complement Pontardawe ‘s other facilities including the Sports Hall, Exercise to Music Studio, Indoor 6 Rink Bowls Hall, Creche, Outdoor Football Pitches, 1 Rugby Pitch, 2 Tennis Courts, Squash Courts and Bar.  In addition Pontardawe’s 25m Swimming Pool and Teaching Pool are only a short distance away offering open public sessions and a range of learn to swim.”
