Wrexham‘s AM, Lesley Griffiths, is backing moves in the National Assembly for Wales, to put members of the armed forces from Wales, on the same financial footing as those from Scotland and England, when it comes to receiving reductions in the amount of council tax they pay.
The AM wants to see Welsh armed forces families, who live in an MoD property when working, receive an automatic 50% reduction in their council tax on properties they own back home in Wales,
Ms Griffiths has signed a Statement of Opinion in the Assembly calling for change. The Statement says:
“This Assembly recognises the debt owed to members of the Armed Forces from Wales and calls upon the Welsh Government to support Service families in Wales by introducing the same reductions in council tax payments as Scotland and England.”
Commenting in support of the campaign, Lesley Griffiths AM said:
“I believe its unfair that armed forces personnel from Wales are expected to pay more than their counterparts from Scotland and England. That is why I am supporting moves to get this situation changed.
“We are all proud of work undertaken by our armed forces – wherever they serve in the world. Some lay their lives on the line every day in extremely dangerous circumstances. I hope this is looked at by the Welsh Assembly Government, to see if this things can be rectified and parity with other parts of the UK, can be achieved.”
