WAG visit for Vale Tidy Towns group

Representatives from the Welsh Assembly Government visited the Vale of Glamorgan recently to see first-hand some of the work undertaken by Tidy Town volunteers in the area.

The popular WAG Tidy Towns scheme is successfully run in the Vale by the Vale of Glamorgan Council in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy.

Llanilltud Fawr in flower, Llantwit Major town centre and the gardens of Cartref residents’ home in Barry were some of the projects WAG representatives visited, accompanied by Vale Council senior enforcement officer Denny White and Pam Barnes from Keep Wales Tidy.

The project encourages local people to initiate and take responsibility for worthwhile local projects, persuading them to carry out sustainable and practical improvements to their environment, allowing interested stakeholders to bid for grant money and ultimately making a visual difference to their town, village or hamlet.

Volunteers have united and worked hard on all schemes undertaken during the past year in the Vale. In the instance of the Cartref residents’ home, the 12th Barry Sea Scouts group along with volunteers from two charities – Llamau and Scope, beautifully renovated and improved the gardens for residents to enjoy.

Denny White said: “It has been a truly successful year with many groups putting ideas forward, being successful with funding bids from the Tidy Towns project and carrying out projects that benefit and can be enjoyed by the whole community; such as allotments, school litter picking events, fly tipping initiatives and wildlife gardens in Colwinston.”

Denny added: “I would like to thank all stakeholders involved over the past year, but would particularly like to acknowledge Llamau, Scope, Mark Robertson and his Youth Offending Team and Keep Wales Tidy’s efforts.”

If you have a project that could benefit from the support of Tidy Towns such as litter picking, path maintenance, installing benches and picnic sites, improving disabled access, developing community gardens or running waste amnesties and habitat management, please contact Keep Wales Tidy’s Vale Project Officer Ian Harvey on 029 2072 6985 or email [email protected].
