Sporting Staff on the Rise

Latest figures have shown that the number of volunteers and young leaders trained by Cardiff Council’s sports development team is on the increase.

Sport.Cardiff focuses on the improvement of grassroots sport development in schools, clubs and communities across the city.

The department aims to enrich the lives of the people of Cardiff through clubs, coaching and competition with a focus on children and young people.

Sport in Cardiff relies on the hard work and dedication of volunteers and coaches who are supported by the Coaching and Workforce Project.

The project was launched in April 2010 to accommodate the large number of volunteers becoming involved in the expansion of Sport.Cardiff.

Since then, over 400 people have been accepted onto the scheme with 208 volunteers and young leaders being trained in the last quarter.

The project is supported by the Coach and Volunteer Accreditation Scheme which certifies that each person is prepared to meet minimum industry standards.

Each new coach, volunteer or young leader receives comprehensive training, support and guidance to ensure they are able to deliver high quality sports activities to children and young people.

The Coach and Volunteer Accreditation Scheme was recently recognised as part of the  London 2012 Inspire programme, a scheme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “Sport.Cardiff continues to be a fantastic initiative providing children and young people access to sport. The volunteers, coaches and teachers who give up their time are a huge factor to the success of the scheme, allowing the programme to continue to grow, enriching the lives of more and more children across the city”.

The University of Wales in Cardiff (UWIC) part fund the Coaching and Workforce project and support Sport.Cardiff by providing a number of placement students to assist on their activity programmes as well as working with volunteers to bring them up to accreditation standard.
