Teenagers in Aberdare are being given the chance to take the wheel in a bid to prepare to take to the open road, as part of the ongoing range of exciting opportunities offered by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Services for Young People E3+ scheme.
Fifteen young people signed up for the Driving School at Aberdare High School, which was delivered in partnership between Services for Young People and Rob Irvin Driving School.
It gives the pupils aged 15 and above the chance to learn basic driving skills and maneuvers over during a 5-week course in a real environment, not a simulator.
The course covers aspects of the theory behind driving, before students take to the wheel of one of the cars from the driving school.
The programme has already been a huge success and forms part of a wider programme of events organised at Aberdare High School for its pupils, those who attend its cluster schools and the wider community, for the holidays.
Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, said: “This is yet another example of the world of opportunities we are offering young people via our far-reaching and innovative Services for Young People.
“Throughout the forthcoming October half-term break, the department is working to not only beat boredom, but also introduce young people to a wide range of opportunities and activities that are based on what young people themselves have said they want.
“Barriers such as transport and cost have been addressed, leaving an exciting, enriching and extensive range of extra-curricular activities.”
