Celebrating the Gypsy and Traveller Community

Cardiff Councils Inclusion Team and Traveller Education Service have been working with the local Gypsy and Traveller community of Cardiff to challenge stereotypes and to showcase their talents.

Both teams work closely with the Gypsy and Traveller community and have helped to assist members of the community achieve their goals.

For instance, last August Victoria Evans ,a young Gypsy studying towards a qualification in childcare, achieved the Learner of the Month award. She was also invited to speak about the benefits of training at a conference in Cardiff.

Then there is Dino Price, a 12 year old Welsh Gypsy who lives on a Caravan site in Cardiff . Dino recently achieved success in the welsh boxing championships held by the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association (WABA). Dino is dedicated to his sport and trains with his father twice a week. His little brother Rico is also continuing the family tradition and has just taken up kickboxing.

During last years Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month, Miley Doran and Nicola Evans, supported by the Council run Traveller Education Service , won a storytelling competition to celebrate the month. As part of winning, the students celebrated their success with families at the Mansion House in Cardiff.  In November, the two will attend a special award ceremony at Leeds Civic Hall.

Executive Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, Cllr Judith Woodman, said:” The Inclusion team and Traveller Education Service are helping to breakdown barriers and helping the Gypsy and Traveller community reach their potential.

“The support of both teams is essential in helping to challenge these stereotypes and to ensure all cultures are nurtured within the city.”
