Green Glyncoch’s Pioneering New Strategy

A groundbreaking scheme run by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to turn Glyncoch into the country’s first zero waste village has introduced a new recycling scheme which will benefit the environment and the pockets of the residents themselves!

The Council’s Streetcare Team with its partner Sort & Save want all residents and traders to support the initiative which will enhance the local community and work towards a more sustainable future.

Head coach of the Wales national team Warren Gatland will join the Council’s Deputy Leader Cllr Anthony Christopher and Nigel England of Sort & Save to launch the scheme at Garth Avenue in Glyncoch. A specially designed recycling depot has been placed on the garage area of Garth Avenue where residents can bring their recyclable materials.

The new scheme is a partnership project between Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Sort & Save organisation which financially rewards individuals and businesses for the quantity of waste they recycle.

Whether a small local business, a large family or a single person household, Sort & Save is free to register. It’s an easy and financially rewarding way to put recyclable waste to good use and is also a great way for small businesses to avoid the increasing costs of waste management.

By taking greater care in sorting the waste, residents can accumulate recycling points which convert into financial rewards. Working with the Green Glyncoch initiative, the scheme promises to be the most effective way to encourage recycling in the community.

The points accumulated as the recyclable waste builds up can be converted into financial rewards and redeemed and credited to the individual. Alternatively residents can choose to donate their points to local causes, such as schools, within the community.

Since the start of the year the percentage of residents who now recycle their household waste has risen from 42% to a promising 65%. And although there’s still a long way to go, the news displays the ongoing success of the scheme.

The Council’s Streetcare Team are also changing the method of refuse and recycling collection services in the village to increase recycling.

From November 8th all of the 240litre wheelie bins will be removed from the village and replaced with a 120litre waste bin, a 49litre food waste bin, a kitchen caddy and recycling bags to enable residents to take part in the scheme. A recycling start pack will also be sent to all properties and Council staff will be available to answer any questions.

What To Do:

  • Recycle all dry recyclable materials using the clear recycling bags provided
  • Recycle all food waste using the biogredable bags provided
  • Only put non-recyclable material in the 120litre bin

What Not To Do:

  • Do not put any side waste outside the bin as this will not be collected
  • Green waste will only be collected if it is in clear recycling bags
  • Do not put any recycling in the waste bin

Anyone with household items such as furniture and small electrical items can use the Council’s Community Recycling Centre or contact the Council’s bulky waste collection service on 01443 494700.

Residents who do not take part in the new scheme will cause the village not to achieve its aim and objectives to be a zero waste community.

The Council’s Streetcare Team will also be monitoring the area to ensure all residents take part. If any residents don’t comply it could result in enforcement action and ultimately a fixed penalty notice of £75.

Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services Cllr Anthony Christopher said: “The Council is committed to making Green Glyncoch a success and with the total support of all residents we can make this project a reality. But it does need the commitment of everyone involved and that is why we hope residents will follow the very simple everyday practices of how to dispose of their waste.

“The issue of recycling, waste management and the reduction of rubbish sent to landfill is of paramount importance in today’s age. Currently the European directive makes it clear the rate of recycling must improve or we could be faced with harsh financial penalties.

“We recognise the responsibility to the future of the planet and remain committed to doing all in our power to raise awareness and encourage even more residents and businesses in the county borough to adhere to the very simple method of managing their waste sensibly for the benefit of all.”
