In a bid to further help boost tourism in Caerphilly county borough, Jill Evans MEP paid a special visit to Caerphilly recently (2nd November), to speak at length with the local Tourism Association.
Jill Evans MEP spoke in detail with members of the Caerphilly Tourism Association and local councillors about any concerns they have, as well as looking at ways of raising the profile of Caerphilly county borough as a key tourist destination even further.
Cllr Ron Davies, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Countryside said, “It was a pleasure to welcome Jill to Caerphilly county borough to discuss how we can sustain and continue to build upon our county borough’s popularity as a destination of choice for tourists”.
He continued, “Continued European funding is vital in our quest to further boost tourism, and we have submitted an ambitious programme of initiatives, which subject to funding from the Rural Development Programme would help rural communities, tourism, local food producers and recreation across our county borough”.
“Jill has made it a priority to lobby hard for this funding on Caerphilly’s behalf, and I look forward to hopefully seeing our ambitious proposals come to fruition in the not too distant future”.
Despite the ongoing problems facing the UK economy, the last 12 months has seen a significant rise in visitors to Caerphilly county borough, many of who have been drawn by the spectacular scenery and historic sites on offer across the county borough.
Caerphilly Visitor Centre, opposite the town’s magnificent castle, continues to receive a steady stream of visitors from across the globe wanting to find out what’s on offer within the area. Almost 40,000 visitors have passed through the doors so far this financial year.
The bed booking service offered by the centre is also performed exceptionally well and was boosted a result of the booking fee being waivered and the phenomenal interest generated by the Ryder Cup.
Cwmcarn Campsite and Visitor Centre is also performing well overall with campsite income in excess of targets and much improved on last year. Over 110,000 people have visited the popular countryside destination so far this year.
Cwmcarn has become a key destination for mountain bike enthusiasts from around the world who flock to the site to enjoy the white-knuckle downhill trails that have been developed there.
