Plaid Cymru’s Education Spokesperson has attacked the motives of the Lib Dems for increasing tuition fees to a possible £9,000 per year for students. Lib Dem politicians have argued that tuition fees are unavoidable due to the economic downturn.
However, Nerys Evans AM has highlighted the Lib Dem pre-election claims of having a fully costed manifesto pledge to abolish fees altogether.
Nerys Evans AM said:“The Lib Dems claimed that a vote for them was a vote to scrap tuition fees. We heard bold promises of a fully costed manifesto yet their tune has quickly changed now they have merged with the Tories. It is clear that the Lib Dems are either incompetent, dishonest or very likely both.
Students throughout Wales will wonder why the Lib Dem manifesto stated they had worked out it was financially viable to scrap fees in May, but have increased them to £27,000 over three years in November. What, other than the principles of the Lib Dems being discarded, has happened?”
