Road Safety is top of the class in Rhydyfelin

Road Safety was top of the class during an important awareness-raising week at Rhydyfelin Nursery.

Tots at the nursery recently celebrated their Road Safety Week, with the help of the Council’s Road Safety Unit, Trading Standards, School Cluster Worker Nadine Reeves and South Wales Police.

They enjoyed presentations about the Green Cross Code, why it is so important to be seen and to be safe on the roads and more.

There were also special sessions with Trading Standards, where car seats were checked and important safety advice issued.

One of the highlights of the week was when the children were taken into the nursery’s sensory room so they could see just how effective reflective clothing is – and why it is so important to be safe and be seen, especially as the dark evenings are now drawing in.

The week, organised by Nadine Reeves, school cluster worker for the area and nursery staff, also saw the children make traffic light cookies and learn lots about how to stay safe when on the road.

The successful week ended with a Road Safety Party enjoyed by all the children, as well as nursery staff and the partnership staff who made the event possible.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Road Safety, said: “This was a really interesting and fun week for all involved, thanks to the efforts of the staff at the nursery and the support of the partner agencies.

“Credit should also be given to all the young children who took part as they were so enthusiastic about road safety and had a great time learning new information.

“I hope it has given them the skills and confidence they need to stay safe when they are out and about.”
