Trearddur Bay welcomes their new Atlantic 85 lifeboat

Trearddur Bay lifeboat station received its new Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat today and are preparing for a week of intense training as they continue to save lives at sea.

The Atlantic 85 lifeboat was funded by the local RNLI fundraising branch as well as fundraising branches from across Herefordshire. As the new inshore lifeboat made her way up to north Wales, she made a special visit to Hereford Cathedral so that the members of Leominster branch could see the result of their hard work.

The Atlantic 85 is the most advanced inshore lifeboat ever produced by the RNLI. She can reach speeds of up to 35 knots and is fitted with a radar system, radio direction finding equipment and a sophisticated chart plotter to aid search and rescue operations, particularly in low visibility. She will also be able to carry more casualties than her predecessor.

Four members of RNLI staff will be training the volunteer lifeboat crew, mechanics, launch and recovery helpers and other station personnel this week to ensure that the volunteers have a thorough understanding of their new lifeboat.

Andy Hurley, RNLI Training Inspector said:

‘This week we will concentrate on ensuring that the volunteers at the station have a thorough understanding of the operation of the lifeboat, its kit and all safety procedures. The crew will also receive training on launch and recovery and maintenance of the lifeboat. Training is vital so that the RNLI can ensure that the crew are prepared for any situation and to ensure their own safety.’

The Atlantic 85 arrived at Trearddur Bay lifeboat station late this afternoon where the volunteer lifeboat crew were waiting eagerly to start their training.
