Feeding the breeding ewe in an organic system

You can find out about the feed requirements of organic breeding ewes at an event at ADAS Pwllpeiran, Ceredigion, on Thursday 18th November. It is being organized by Organic Centre Wales as part of the Farming Connect Organic Development Programme and is suitable for all farmers.

ADAS nutritionist David Peers will be explaining how silage analysis can be used to design a supplementary feeding regime for ewes, and there will be a discussion about what makes for good quality silage.

“Giving ewes a high quality diet that will allow them to reach their potential and produce healthy lambs can be costly, so knowing the nutrient value of your conserved forage is important when deciding what supplementary feeding is needed,” said David Frost, Senior Organic Adviser at ADAS and one of the event’s organizers.“ At this workshop we will be looking at farmers’ silage analyses and discussing the implications for supplementary feeding.”

Pwllpeiran is a 1300 ha ADAS research farm in the Cambrian Mountains Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) of mid-Wales. The upland organic beef and sheep unit was set up in 1993 and currently comprises 245 ha of the total area of the farm.

Also in attendance at the event will be Mair Morgan of ADAS  who will be discussing the feeding situation at Pwllpeiran and Mari Jones of Organic Centre Wales.

The event starts at 10.00 and ends at 3.30, and the postcode is SY23 4AB.  To book a place or for further information, please contact Mandy Cowie on 01974 282229 or email: [email protected].
