Taff Trail upgrade is underway

Cyclists are being reminded that some sections of the Taff Trail are now closed so work can be undertaken as part of a scheme to relieve flooding in the Rhydyfelin area near Pontypridd.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is implementing the flood alleviation scheme to houses in Rhydyfelin and along a section of the popular Taff Trail.

Existing drainage systems that have caused repeated flooding of properties in the area to the south of Rhydyfelin – to the rear of Maes Uchaf and Llys Corrwg – will be upgraded, as well as four kilometres of the Taff Trail cycleway between Rhydyfelin and Nantgarw.

Cycleway works being carried out include the upgrading of the existing cycleway, creating a 2.5 metre-wide tarmac surface, and the construction of improved security access points.

The length of Taff Trail affected runs from Dynea Road in Rhydyfelin to A468 Caerphilly Road, Nantgarw. The sections of the Taff Trail which have been closed are:

Dynea Road to Tesco, Upper Boat now closed and reopening on February 24, 2011.

Tesco, Upper Boat to Groswen Halt will be closed from November 22 until December 20, 2010.

Groswen Halt to A468 Caerphilly Road, Nantgarw – now closed and set to reopen on November 22.

The Council is working in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government, the Welsh European Funding Office and Sustrans on the scheme. Civil engineering contractor, Morrison Construction Ltd., has been appointed to carry out the improvement works.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Emergency Planning and Customer Care Cllr Andrew Morgan said: “Cyclists will be able to enjoy a much-improved route when this work is completed along a significant section of the Taff Trail.

“A temporary diversion of the cycleway will take place while these essential works are carried out.”
