‘Nappucino’ event

A ‘Nappucino’ event aimed at encouraging more new mums to save money and the environment by using the latest real nappies is being held on Monday 22nd November 2010 at Truly Scrumptious CafÉ, Old Market Street, Neath between 10am and 12pm.

The ‘Nappuccino’, is being staged by Neath Port Talbot Environment Forum, during European Week of Waste Reduction, to promote re-usable nappies in a fun and informal atmosphere. Parents, parents-to-be, family and friends can learn about the benefits of using real nappies, meet a real-nappy advisor and have a chat over a tea or coffee during the drop-in session.

Persuading more people to use real nappies is important.  Each baby will go through around 5,000 nappies in a 2 ½ year period which equates to 156 black bags and will weigh approximately the same as a family car!  And as far as cost is concerned, it is estimated that ‘from birth to potty’ families spend £600 to £1,000 on disposable nappies, whereas the real nappy equivalent can cost as little £150.

Councillor Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council explains, “With 500 disposable nappies being thrown away every minute in Wales, using real nappies even part time can make a difference.  Most new parents are unaware of the wide variety of washable nappies now available. These modern real nappies are environmentally friendly, economical and easy to use. There is no need for folding, boiling or soaking anymore and pins have been replaced with Velcro and poppers.”
