A Japanese scientist who specialises in studying birds is spending a year at the Afan Forest Park in the Afan Valley.
Godo Utaka, who trained as a ranger in Afan’s twin forest in Japan is an expert ornithologist who studied Art at Sunderland University.
He is carrying out a study of bird life at Afan Forest Park and intends to write a book comparing bird life in Afan with its twin forest in Japan.
His research of bird life will be shared with the Council’s biodiversity team as well as the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) National Winter and Summer Bird census.
Some of his illustrations will be used for interpretation panels so the Afan Forest Park is once again being highlighted on the international map.
“This research was made possible thanks to a grant from The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and sponsorship from UNA exchange in Cardiff,” says Mr Utaka.
“The Afan Forest Park is a unique tourism attraction visited by thousands of people every year.
“The shared information between both forest parks will prove invaluable as research into the environment progresses.”
Council Leader, Ali Thomas, added, “I am delighted to welcome Mr Utaka to the Afan Forest Park and am pleased to see closer links being forged with Japan.
