Empty home to go under the hammer

An abandoned Newport property is being sold by auction tomorrow (Wednesday, 17 November) after the city council took action under its empty homes strategy.

Newland, Rennie and Wilkins is holding the auction which begins at 7pm in the Kings Hotel, High Street.

The house, in St John’s Road, Beechwood, was partly converted into two flats but has been empty for at least 14 years. All attempts to trace and contact the owners were unsuccessful.

Earlier this year, the council adopted a new five-year empty homes strategy which includes using enforced sales where vacant properties are causing problems to the community or statutory services.

It means the council can recover any unpaid charges as well as taking steps to bring a property back into occupation.

“The council is embarking on a campaign to target other empty homes in the city and will be actively seeking remedies to prevent further deterioration in Newport’s housing stock,” said a spokeperson.
