Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has lobbied in the Chamber for more support from the Welsh Government for Welsh students to study the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence, as under current arrangements English students in Wales receive grant funding for their training whilst their Welsh counterparts do not.
Commenting, Mr Bates said:
“Following a recent visit to the High Performance Academy in Wrexham, I was concerned to learn that English students in Wales receive around £2,500 grant funding per year to study the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence, while students from Wales do not receive the same support.
“The Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence is an excellent scheme, which helps young people with the realistic potential to achieve excellence in their sport. It is crucial that students from Wales are not disadvantaged by the lack of funding to help with this training.
“I have urged the Minister for Heritage to take action to support the delivery of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence across a range of sports in Wales, such as tennis, so that students from either side of the border can achieve their full sporting potential.”
