Local history made simple

Researching local and family history is now much simpler for Caerphilly county borough residents, after an exciting new online catalogue was launched.

‘Chronicle Collection’ combines the records and databases of Caerphilly county borough’s Libraries and the Museums and Heritage Service Collection, based at the Winding House in New Tredegar.

Cllr Ron Davies, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Countryside explains how the brand new online catalogue works. He said, “The catalogue will enable users to simply type in the name of the place or subject they are interested in, to find out what books, objects, photographs, digital stories and other information is available to them”.

He continued, “We are thrilled to have developed this successful partnership between the Council’s Libraries Service and the Museums and Heritage Service with the help of CyMAL, and hope the online catalogue proves to be a great asset for local historians and researchers.”

The catalogue was officially launched recently at the Autumn History Conference, organised by the Winding House, Gelligaer Historical Society and Llancaiach Fawr Manor.

Many of the local history groups attending praised the new site and the research opportunities it will provide. The online database will develop further throughout the year.

‘Chronicle Collection’ was made possible with funding from CyMAL – Museums, Archives and Libraries of Wales.

The online catalogue can be accessed at www.caerphilly.gov.uk/chronicle.
