An area of land in Caerphilly has been given a makeover thanks to the help of over 40 local volunteers and the Council’s ‘Tidy Towns Tidy Places’ team.
Local residents, businesses and Caerphilly County Borough Council joined forces to transform the area of land in Pontypandy, by planting native flowers and bulbs, cleaning up the nearby water course and track way and collecting litter.
Keep Wales Tidy, staff from nearby Tesco, McDonalds and Crossways Tavern and pupils from the Eco-Club at nearby Bedwas Junior School also joined in the clean up, which in just a few hours saw more than two tonnes of litter and larger household items collected from the watercourse and footways.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Environmental Cleansing and Fast Forward teams also took part in the clean up.
More than 2,000 bulbs were also planted to help brighten up the area.
Cllr Lyn Ackerman, Cabinet Member for the Environment said, “It is pleasing to see so many people getting involved and doing their bit for the local environment. I would especially like to thank the local school children from Bedwas Primary School who showed genuine enthusiasm in helping to make their local area clean, tidy and more attractive”.
The Council also issued free bags for life to customers shopping at the Crossways Tesco store throughout the day, to encourage them to think about sustainability and green issues.
Cllr Ron Davies, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Countryside said, “This initiative demonstrates that by working together, we can make a real difference to the quality of our environment”.
He continued, “The clean up, coupled with issuing free bags for life to shoppers, I hope will encourage more people to take pride in their local area and consider just a few simple steps they can take, such as reusing carrier bags or using bags for life, to really make a difference to our environment”.
