Progress for boulevard advanced works

Preparatory works have now started to help improve a key transport route into and out of Swansea.

Off-peak working has been introduced on Oystermouth Road at the junction with West Way to improve bus links with the new Swansea City Bus Station that’s due to welcome its first passengers early next month.

The works include new landscaping and tree planting and will provide better access to the new bus station for westbound coaches and buses turning right on to the designated bus lane on West Way.

The existing pedestrian crossing and traffic lights are being slightly relocated and a temporary crossing is being put in place from early December until early next year.

Initial work will be complete by early December with work on a new and improved pedestrian crossing starting after Christmas and completed by April 2011. The works will include a temporary, off-peak single lane closure on the westbound stretch of Oystermouth Road near West Way between 9.30am and 3.30pm when necessary.

Separate works on the eastbound carriageway of Victoria Road between York Street and the Strand will be progressed towards the end of the week.

This includes preparatory work for the filling-in of the Victoria Road underpass next year, the widening of the Victoria Road footway by Salubrious Place and changes to traffic islands nearby.

Temporary narrow lanes are being put in place to allow works to proceed while minimising the impact on traffic flows.

The combination of these advanced works will help pave the way for the multi-million pound boulevard scheme that will considerably improve the landscaping and public areas between the Tawe Bridges and the LC. No major works will take place until next year.

The boulevard scheme is funded as part of a multi-million pound package from the Welsh Assembly Government through the European Regional Development Fund. It includes a contribution from the Strategic Regeneration Area (SRA) programme.
