A children’s author, made famous for books including Aliens are Invading my School, dropped in on a Port Talbot School to give the pupils a masterclass in creative writing.
Dinah Capparucci, who was shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Book Prize, was invited to Tywyn Primary School, Sandfields, by the Neath Port Talbot Council Library Service, to talk about writing stories and what inspirations she draws on for the characters in her books.
Mrs Capparucci, a mother of two young children whose other literary successes include Vampires are Living Next Door and Computers are Eating My Friends, then held a short writing sessions with the pupils to put into practice what they had learnt.
The event was held as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s (WAG) National Literacy Plan, which aims to engage children in reading to increase literacy and forge links between local communities and their libraries.
Neath Port Talbot Council leader Ali Thomas said libraries are committed to providing opportunities for children to meet writers in the county borough.
“Being able to do this at a young age can inspire the children and make them realise that they too can write and create stories,” he said.
“I’m happy to see the library service and schools working together to bring authors to schools. These partnerships are important in delivering quality education services in Neath Port Talbot.”
