Plans for major improvements to Park Primary School in Llay have been given the go ahead by Wrexham Council’s Planning committee.
The project worth £4.3 million includes the refurbishment of the existing junior school, the building of a new extension for infant and pre school class and safety and access improvements to School Road. 80% of the funding was provided by the Welsh Assembly and the remaining 20% was funded by the local authority.
The plans are project managed by Wrexham Council’s Asset Management team who are currently working on the detailed drawings and tender package which is expected to go out early December.
Su Evans, Architect with Wrexham Council, said:
“We are working closely with the school to ensure that once work begins the school will operate with minimum disruption. If everything goes according to schedule works could start as soon as February next year on the car park works. Building work could start on the infants block in March and the whole project should be completed by December 2012.”
Cllr Aled Roberts, Leader of Wrexham Council, said:
“Improving schools is one of our priority areas as we use every means available to provide our staff and pupils with schools and an environment that are fit for the 21st Century. We will continue to work with the Welsh Assembly to secure further funding for other schools in Wrexham.”
Improvements to Wrexham’s schools are ongoing across the county borough. Works are almost complete at Penley school on a new sports hall, Darland school and Bryn Alyn schools are both set to open new science blocks in 2011. Work has started on a brand new school in Rhosymedre and a planning application has been submitted for a new Welsh medium primary school in Gwersyllt.
All the building and improvement works currently ongoing conform to BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) which is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the industry standard used to describe a building’s environmental performance.
