Would you like to see a ukulele made from an old library book? Or how about looking at libraries through Dylan Thomas’ eyes?
You’ll be able to experience this and much more at the Express Yourself exhibition which is held at Holyhead Library until Monday 31 January 2011..
The Express Yourself national libraries arts competition recently encouraged people of all ages to show off their creative talents based on the theme of ‘libraries’. This unique exhibition includes creative writing, music, animation, painting, photography, drawing and sculpture
The winners were selected from a range of categories including primary and secondary schools, academic institutions, community organisations and individuals.
The Holyhead exhibition includes the photography of Ryan Norman, a student at Coleg Menai, Llangefni. His striking collection of images entitled “The library loves you” really impressed the judging panel and earned him runner-up spot in the visual art category.
A short film created by Anglesey winner, eight-year-old Ela Cepel, will also be on show as part of the exhibition. Her film entitled, “If you go down for a book today” was highly commended by regional judge, local author and illustrator, Jac Jones.
Anglesey Community Librarian, Rhian Evans, said, “The Express Yourself exhibition at Holyhead Library really is a fantastic explosion of ideas. Many of the pieces are very creative and thought provoking and visitors have already been giving it rave reviews.”
The Express Yourself competition is one part of the national marketing campaign for libraries in Wales, which forms a central part of Libraries for Life, the Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy for libraries in Wales. The Assembly is investing £10.5 million between 2008 and 2011.
Commenting on the standard of competition entries, Welsh Libraries Champion, actress and writer Ruth Jones said, “The creativity and imagination shown in all categories is amazing; they would certainly inspire me to visit a library! I would urge everyone to go along and take a look at this fantastic exhibition.”
All the winning entries together with film clips of the winners receiving their prizes can be seen on library.wales.org.
