Communities unite for Inter Faith Week

Communities across Wales are holding events this week to promote understanding of different faiths and strengthen the relationship between people from religious and non-religious backgrounds.

The activities are part of national Inter Faith Week and are supported with £5000 funding from the Welsh Assembly Government.

Activities range from an art exhibition in Newport to an evening of storytelling, poetry and song in Lampeter.

In Bangor, different faith groups are meeting to discover more about their respective religions and Cardiff’s Temple of Peace will hold an inter faith workshop.

Wales’ Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant said,

“Wales is a wonderfully diverse country, made up of people from different backgrounds, traditions and faiths. It is important to understand these differences, to appreciate what makes us unique and likewise to realise the common qualities that we share.

“Events such as these can strengthen and unite our communities and I am delighted to support this year’s Inter Faith Week.”

First Minister for Wales, Carwyn Jones is Chair of the Faith Communities Forum in Wales. He said:

“I’m pleased that we have been able to support events linked with Inter Faith Week so that people are able to learn more about the work being done to promote understanding between people of different faiths and beliefs.”

The funding supports the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Getting on Together – a Community Cohesion Strategy for Wales’ which was launched in 2009.
