A Gwynedd Council scheme is aimed at helping to ensuring children’s safety as they get on their bikes.
The Council’s Road Safety Unit scheme means that all year six school pupils in the county are given training, in addition to what they learn at home, so that they are confident and road wise on their bicycles.
School staff are trained to a national standard and a training handbook has recently been translated into Welsh so that all lessons are given clear structure and guidelines. All lessons are conducted on the school grounds and also out on the main road.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Environment Portfolio Leader, said:
“This week is National Road Safety Week, so it’s apt that we remind ourselves that teaching children to ride their bikes safely and confidently is vital to help keep them from harm. Our roads are increasingly busy but this should not discourage children from cycling to and from school, or riding for fun.
“Cycling is a great way to travel to school, it helps keep children fit and healthy, is good for the environment and could cut down on traffic around the school gates at peak times.
“The families of the children teach them how to be safe and responsible while riding their bikes and I am confident that these extra lessons by the Council and the schools are of a great benefit.”
