Wednesday 1 December is the closing date for entries in two of the Wrexham and District National Eisteddfod’s main competitions, and writers are expected to present their entries for the Prose Medal and the Daniel Owen Memorial Prize by this date.
In 2011, the Prose Medal will be awarded for a volume of creative prose, including no more than 40,000 words, responding to the title ‘Rebellion’. The Medal is donated by the Denbigh and Flint branch of the Farmer’s Union of Wales, and the financial prize of £750 is given by the D Tecwyn Lloyd Memorial Trust and the Owain Cyfeiliog Society, Wrexham. This year’s adjudicators are Branwen Jarvis, Hazel Walford Davies and Grahame Davies..
The Daniel Owen Memorial Prize is awarded for an unpublished novel of no less than 50,000 words. Emyr Llywelyn, Jon Gower and Elin Llwyd Morgan are the 2011 adjudicators and the winner will receive £5000 and the Medal, donated by Siop y Siswrn, Wrexham and Mold.
Hywel Wyn Edwards, National Eisteddfod Organiser is urging people to compete, and says:
“We are hoping that a large number of writers will compete in these competitions this time. There’s only two months to go for anyone thinking of emulating the success of Jerry Hunter and Grace Roberts at the Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys National Eisteddfod this year, so please make sure that we receive any work before the closing date.”
31 January is the next important date for anyone wishing to compete in next year’s Eisteddfod. This is the closing date for the drama writing competitions and for nominations for the Sir T.H. Parry-Williams Memorial Medal and the Science and Technology Medal.
The Eisteddfod receives a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government through the Welsh Language Board, and also receives money from Welsh local authorities through a partnership agreement with the Welsh Local Government Association.
