Gwynedd Council has improved the recycling banks site on Pwllheli’s North Quay, following a request by Pwllheli Town Council.
The site has already been cleared and new signs will be erected telling people what waste can be put in the banks, thanks to funding from the Assembly Government’s Tidy Towns scheme.
Signs warning people not to tip rubbish on the site will also be put up. There have been several instances of fly-tipping at North Quay. Tipping is an environmental crime which can make an area look untidy and can cause harm to people’s health, to wildlife and can cause pollution. Every time Gwynedd Council staff are called upon to clear away illegal fly-tipping the tax payer has to pick up the bill.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Environment Portfolio Leader, said:
“The people of Gwynedd tell us that they want to live in clean, tidy and safe communities. Gwynedd Council is working in partnership with Pwllheli Town Council and Fly-tipping Action Wales to ensure that the recycling site at Pwllheli is kept clean and tidy.
“There is no excuse for dumping rubbish in a public place. Every one of us has a responsibility to protect the environment.”
Peter Simpson, Gwynedd Council’s Streetscene Manager, added:
“Fly-tipping is a serious environmental crime. In extreme cases, those found guilty can face a fine of up to £50,000 or even face a spell in prison.
“Gwynedd Council’s Street Enforcement Teams will be monitoring the site and will be taking on the small minority of people who selfishly show no respect to our local environment.”
Helen Jenkins, All-Wales Coordinator for Fly-tipping Action Wales, said:
“Fly-tipping is a crime, everyone is responsible for ensuring that they get rid of their waste in a safe and responsible manner.
“We are confident that we can reduce the number of fly-tipping cases across the county, as it is unnecessary, can ruin our communities and is an extra cost to tax payers.”
Gwynedd Council would encourage everyone to dispose of their waste in a responsible and legal manner:
- All homes receive regular rubbish, recycling and compost collection service. If you don’t know your collection day or are unsure what waste goes in which bin contact the Council’s Waste and Recycling Helpdesk on 01766 771000 or visit www.gwynedd.gov.uk/recycling
- If you want to get rid of waste which is too big or unsuitable to be put in your bin – for example furniture or electrical items such as a freezer – you can organise a bulky waste pick-up by phoning 01766 771000.
- There are recycling centres and banks all over the county. For more information about where they are and opening times phone 01766 771000 or visit www.gwynedd.gov.uk/recycling
