wo schoolgirls have been praised by the city’s Lord Mayor for making Swansea proud after scooping national awards from the St John Ambulance.
Nia Adere, aged nine and from the Clydach Division Badger Sett, has been named Badger of the Year for Wales. It’s the first time that anyone from Swansea has won this title.
Amy Green, aged 16 and also from the Clydach Division, has been named Cadet of the Year for Wales.
In honour of their achievements Swansea Lord Mayor Richard Lewis has thanked them for making Swansea proud.
Cllr Lewis said: “These young people have worked hard to gain these honours which put not only their Clydach division but also Swansea itself on the map.
“They should be very proud of their achievements which set a fine example for others to follow.”
Nia has been a member of Clydach Division’s Badger Sett for four years. She is the grand-daughter of Swansea’s deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Ioan Richards.
Judges were impressed with a project she did on life in Kenya and her family there as well her performance in team and personal activities and in an interview.
Badger Leader Sue Jones said: “Nia is a very kind and caring child and, even though she has a quiet disposition, she has plenty of confidence in her own capabilities.
“She readily participates in group activities, is always willing to help other badgers and her leaders and is now a group leader in charge of a small number of badgers.
“Her parents and the leaders of the division are immensely proud of her achievement in becoming Badger of the Year for Wales.”
Cadet of the Year for Wales Amy Green has been a cadet member for three years.
Divisional Officer in Charge Allen Jones said: “From the outset Amy has embraced all aspects of cadet life and immediately volunteered to become a member of the award winning Cadet Quiz Team.
“After a weekend of group activities, personal challenges and interviews and to the immense pride of her family and the St John leaders from Clydach Division, she was made Cadet of the Year for Wales.”
He added: “Amy has shown herself to be such a wonderful role model for all cadets; a great asset to us in Clydach as well as to St John Ambulance as a whole.
“This is the first time for a Badger and Cadet of the Year for Wales to come from the same division at the same time, so these two young people have brought an immense accolade to the Clydach Division.”
