Council officials are today warning that bogus scammers are taking advantage of vulnerable people on the run up to Christmas.
So what should you do to stop this year’s festive fun turning into mistletoe misery?
Most people at Christmas feel extra pressure to spend more than we can really afford, at a time when many of us find money is tight. Cue scammers trying to make a fast buck.
Many of us are bombarded by letters and emails telling us we have won a lottery only to find we’ve never heard of the company, or bogus prize draws, gift awards and other cash offers.
Being scammed is devastating and traumatic at any time of year, but it’s at Christmas, when people need the money most, that it hits the hardest.
Remember – If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is.
Top Tips to avoid scams this Christmas:
- Be suspicious of letters, phone calls or emails asking you to send money
- Trust your instincts – If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is
- Ask yourself ‘can I afford to give this money away?’
- You are never going to win that big lottery prize so never send money
- Don’t ring premium rate numbers like 090 unless you’re certain how much the call will cost
- Never give out bank account details, credit card numbers or other personal details to people you don’t know
Even if letters seem official don’t be fooled. Ring Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or visit www.consumerdirect.gov.uk for more advice before sending any money.
