Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates hosted the launch of an exhibition of work by Powys schoolchildren at the Senedd this week.
The project ‘A Wall of Smiles’ was developed by the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture and includes artwork from pupils from Berriew, Castle Caereinon, Forden and Leighton Primary Schools.
The ‘Wall of Smiles’ is an outreach project which has been fully funded by the Arts Council of Wales, with match funding from Powys County Council and the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture. The exhibition includes work from nursery and reception, years 1 & 2, years 3 & 4, and years 5 & 6, in all the schools participating in the project, created in the style of Andrew Logan. All the children in the schools worked on the piece of work chosen from their age categories, so the finished piece is a complete group effort from all the children in each category.
Commenting, Mr Bates said:
“The exhibition ‘A Wall of Smiles’ is a collection of beautiful and inspirational artwork by Powys schoolchildren and it is a pleasure to host the exhibition at the Senedd.
“This is a great project, where children were asked to draw pictures of things which made them happy enough to smile. One picture was chosen from each age category and the drawings were then recreated in the style of Andrew Logan, using recycled materials, jewels, mirrors, glitter and many other interesting objects!
“I was delighted to welcome Olivia Thomas and her parents to the Senedd. Olivia drew the fantastic ‘My Dog and Ferret’ which was then transformed into the style of Andrew Logan by Olivia and her classmates in nursery and reception at Castle Caereinion Primary.
“The exhibition has really brightened up the Senedd and made many people smile as they’ve visited it. My congratulations to all pupils who took part in the project and thanks to the pupils and to the Andrew Logan Museum for sharing this wonderful display with us.”
