Following today’s decision by the UK Government to devolve powers for the timing of council tax revaluation, Welsh Conservatives are calling on Labour-Plaid to immediately rule out any upcoming re-banding scheme.
The forthcoming Localism Bill removes any legal requirement for revaluation in 2015.
Shadow Minister for Local Government, Jonathan Morgan AM, said: “The UK Government has today made it clear that Welsh taxpayers do not have to be put through the upheaval of another revaluation of council tax bands.
“By devolving these powers it is effectively scrapping the need for any upcoming revaluation and standing up for homeowners who are still suffering from the last disastrous scheme.
“Labour-Plaid now needs to see sense and take this opportunity to guarantee that there will be no upcoming revaluation in Wales.
“The dark days of Labour’s last disastrous re-banding are still fresh in the minds of thousands of households left out-of-pocket in Wales.
“Four times as many homes moved up one or more council tax bands than moved down, the poorest were hit hardest and thousands are paying hundreds of pounds more every year.
“It was a fiasco that must never be repeated and I urge Labour-Plaid to urgently rule out another unwanted revaluation.”
