Free castle entry brings festive cheer

Children will be able to get into Caerphilly Castle for free during a special two day Christmas event taking place next week.

A delegation from Caerphilly county borough council met CADW representatives recently to encourage them to allow free entry into the Castle during the Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre.

At the meeting Cllr Lindsay Whittle, the leader of council, Cllr Ron Davies and Cllr Phil Bevan formally approached CADW to see if they would waive the charges.

“Although we couldn’t secure free entry for everyone, we are still delighted that CADW have agreed to meet us half way and allow children to get into the castle for free,” said Cllr Lindsay Whittle. “The Caerphilly Christmas Fayre is a major event which showcases the wealth of attractions that the town centre has to offer and the castle is a key draw for many people.”

Cllr Ron Davies added, “We would like to thank CADW for this generous gesture that is in keeping with the spirit of Christmas. Events like this can bring much needed investment to our town centres at a time when retailers need all the support they can get, so it’s important that we do everything we can to encourage as many people as possible to shop locally and boost the local economy.”

The Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre takes place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December. Last year’s event was a major success attracting thousands of visitors to the town centre who soaked up the festive atmosphere and snapped up bargains from the wide variety of market stalls on offer.
