Third generation forest craftsperson Glenn Williams followed his father and his grandfather by working in the public woodlands of north Wales – and has now been honoured for the dedication and enthusiasm he shows for the job.
Forestry Commission Wales apprentice Glenn, who lives in Llangollen, received a Certificate of Achievement at the annual awards held by Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for land-based and environmental industries.
The awards recognise the most inspirational people working in the environmental and land-based industries in Wales.
Proud father Dai was at the ceremony held in the Lantra offices at the Royal Welsh Showground’s Winter Fair on November 29 to see 23-year-old Glenn collect his certificate from MP for Brecon and Radnor and spokesman for agriculture and rural affairs, Roger Williams.
Both father and son now work together to maintain the Assembly Government woodlands in the Hiraethog area of north Wales.
Glenn joined FC Wales on the Commission’s Foundation Modern Apprenticeship scheme as an apprentice forest craftsperson after previously working on the production line at Ifor Williams trailers in Corwen.
After completing his apprenticeship, he was offered a permanent position and is really enjoying working in the great outdoors.
He said, “I love my job and it’s great to keep the family tradition going. Forestry offers a variety of career opportunities and hopefully, with the skills I’m now learning, I’ll have a long career with FC Wales.”
Glenn was nominated by Foundation Modern Apprentice Scheme Manager, Hayley Evans.
Hayley said, “I’m so proud of Glenn. He has shown commitment and dedication throughout his apprenticeship and has a first class attitude to learning.
“He’s a fine example of a young learner pursuing his chosen career and deserves credit and recognition for his success.”
FC Wales set up the Foundation Modern Apprentice Scheme in response to a skills shortage in the forestry sector.
Another forest craftsperson, 29-year-old Caroline Riches of Radyr, Cardiff, made it a double celebration for FC Wales when she was named Lantra Lifelong Learner of the Year.
Lantra’s National Director for Wales, Kevin Thomas, said, “Glenn and Caroline highlight how apprenticeships can have a positive impact on your career at any age.
“We hope they will continue to develop their skills and inspire others to think about the benefits apprenticeships can offer.”
