Despite the mixed weather experienced last weekend, thousands of people braved the elements to come along and enjoy Blackwood’s first ever Dickensian Fayre.
Over 50 festive stalls, together with funfair rides, music and dance took over the town centre, and helped enliven the festive atmosphere.
Cllr Ron Davies, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning said, “This wonderful event really helped to put Blackwood on the map this festive season. I am delighted that despite the unpredictable weather, so many people still came along to enjoy the vast array of attractions on offer”.
He continued, “I also hope this festive occasion helped and will continue to help local traders to boost their business over Christmas and into the New Year”.
To fit in with the theme of the occasion, Dickensian entertainers also took visitors to the event back in time.
As part of the eco-element to the Dickensian Fayre, Council staff gave out more than 2,500 native tree saplings, 3,000 shopping bags for life and four thousand pieces of festive fruit all for FREE.
Promoting the active and healthy living campaign, Council catering staff also gave out free health festive food samples and willing participants helped to ride over 30 miles on an exercise bike that doubled up as a smoothie-making machine.
Over a hundred litres of winter fruits and berries were made by pedal power into smoothie drinks for visitors to sample.
As a finale, on the Sunday afternoon a procession took place along Blackwood High Street, featuring a ‘Green Giant’, brass band and pupils from Blackwood Primary School.
