Arctic Weather – Minister Praises Services

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has praised the work of the police, emergency and traffic services as the current wintry spell continues.

Mr Jones was speaking during a visit to the North Wales Traffic Control Centre at Conwy this afternoon (Monday 20 December 2010).

“The present arctic weather is testing the capacity of our services to the limit – and we all owe a great debt of gratitude to the men and women in our police, emergency and traffic services for their round the clock dedication.

“They have shown immense commitment in battling to clear roads and check abandoned vehicles for stranded people in terrible conditions,” said Mr Jones, who is Minister for the Economy and Transport.

“Some areas are still being affected by severe weather conditions – and I want to advise motorists against making any journeys that are not really necessary, and always be sufficiently prepared.

“Inevitably the endeavours of the Welsh Assembly Government have to focus mainly on keeping motorways and trunk roads clear because they carry the bulk of road traffic.

“We will continue to work in close coordination with local authorities to ensure ready access to vital services such as hospitals.”
