Staff at Swansea Council are continuing to provide vital services as the winter weather continues in the city.
All Swansea Council’s care homes are open today (Tuesday) and the community meals service is close to operating as normal.
Weather and road conditons mean it’s proving difficult to operate day care services as normal but some support is being made available. Home care services are operating but priority is being given to the most vulnerable service users.
Swansea Council collection vehicles, including tractors, have been out and about retrieving waste that wasn’t collected after the recent snowfall.
The disruption caused by the weather has led to collections becoming a day behind and so the Council is urging residents to put their waste out for collection the day after their normal collection is supposed to occur.
Ian Whettleton, Swansea Council’s Divisional Manager for Waste Management, said: “We are back on the roads collecting following the initial snowfall. It does mean we are a day behind but we are doing everything we can to ensure waste is collected.
“We are at the mercy of the weather and any more snowfall or freezing conditions could create more of a backlog. At the moment we are aiming to keep collections to no more than a day behind.
“Residents need to put their waste out for collection the day after their normal collection day. So if you have your waste collected on Tuesday it will now be collected on Wednesday.”
Staff from the Council’s Highways Service are out and about gritting and removing snow. Teams are now concentrating on secondary routes because main roads were covered by gritting teams last night (Monday). Teams will also be clearing snow in busy shopping areas across the City and County of Swansea.
All District Housing Offices and community libraries are open.
All community leisure centres are also open as well as attractions such as Swansea Museum, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Plantasia, the Dylan Thomas Centre and the Archives Service in the Civic Centre.
Central Library in the Civic Centre is closing at 6pm instead of the usual closing time of 8pm. All community libraries are due to close at their normal times.
Waterfront Winterland in the grounds of the National Waterfront Museum is open as normal.
All bus services in Swansea are close to returning to normal. The National Express is running as well as the First Cymru Greyhound service between Swansea and Cardiff.
The Park and Ride services at Fforestfach and Fabian Way are operating as normal. The Landore site is closed.
