Cardiff Council is continuing to work hard to combat the disruption caused by the extreme winter weather.
Since the latest covering of snow the Council has been working under its Snow Plan which concentrates our salting treatment to principal and strategic routes. This allows the main roads into and around the city to keep flowing, and the Council is pleased to report that the network has been running smoothly today thanks to the efforts of the gritting teams.
Snow Plan routes were salted last night twice and other principal routes ploughed. They will continue to be salted each night, with the frequency determined by the weather conditions.
The Council currently has 300 tonnes of salt in stock, with a further 250 tonnes being delivered this week, and 1300 tonnes towards the end of next week.
Various pavement clearing works are being carried out by Cleaner Cardiff and the parks department whilst two small gritters are also operating in City Centre.
Five ploughs are operating in the following areas:
- Pontprennau/Pentwyn
- Llanrumney/St Mellons
- Creigiau/Pentyrch
- Radyr/Tongwnylais/Rhiwbina
- Fairwater/St Fagans/Ely
These will be ploughing only, not gritting, but will venture into side roads as well as main routes and aim to have a significant impact.
Three JCBs have been brought in to clear more rural roads and the Council is also using a Snow Blower (picture attached) which was dispatched to Graig Road in Lisvane today and will be working towards the west of the city.
Unfortunately, the disruption caused by the weather conditions is continuing to affect domestic waste collections.
Those scheduled today for the wards of Plasnewydd, Penylan, Pentyrch, Radyr and Morganstown, Llandaff North, Gabalfa, Whitchurch and Tongwnylais have all been suspended. The next scheduled collection day for these wards will be Tuesday, December 28.
The domestic waste collections scheduled for tomorrow for the wards of Cathays, Creigiau/St Fagans, Llandaff/Fairwater, Riverside and Adamsdown have also been suspended. The next scheduled collection day for these wards will be Wednesday 29 December.
Residents are advised to take their waste back in until their next collection day.
The main street cleansing operations today are again suspended however litter bin emptying, litter picking and supporting gritting services are being undertaken where it is safe and reasonable to do so in the districts.
Some waste collections will take place on the main routes today. These will be mainly commercial waste, such as accessible bins and bags, as well as domestic bags that can be lifted without splitting due to being frozen.
The Household Waste Recycling Centres at Waungron Road and Lamby Way remain open. The Household Waste Recycling site at Bessemer Road should also be open tomorrow.
Social work services are all available but operating a restricted service. The Meals on Wheels and Home Care services are still operating along with Residential Care and Supported Accommodation services which are running as normal. Day Services staff are working at service users homes.
Cardiff Council is making sure that regular updates regarding the effects of the extreme weather are updated on its website at www.cardiff.gov.uk/winterweather
This will provide information relating to council services including gritting and waste collection as well as park and ride facilities, leisure centres, parks, cemeteries and schools.
Council leader Rodney Berman said: “”Council employees continue to work to ensure that the disruption to our services during these extreme weather conditions is as minimal as possible. The snow and ice we are experiencing is replicated throughout Britain but as a Capital city the demands on Cardiff are very high and we are doing everything we can to keep the traffic moving and ensure the city is open for business.
“I commend staff for all their hard work during this difficult period and once again reiterate that Cardiff Council will continue to closely monitor all our key services including those to the vulnerable and try to ensure that the city is best equipped to tackle the disruption.”
