Tonypandy Riots Remembered At Senedd

School children commemorated the centenary of the Tonypandy Riots with a special visit to the Senedd to launch their own education resource pack for distribution throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf.

A group of students from Tonypandy Community College met with Rhondda AM and Minister for Education Leighton Andrews in Cardiff Bay to launch their “Roots To Restoration” teaching resource pack.

The students were congratulated on their outstanding project, which included a 30-minute DVD documentary created by the college itself and received huge praise from the former First Minister Rhodri Morgan AM during its launch.

Now Tonypandy Community College has completed an education pack that is being distributed to all schools throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf to help children learn more about the famous Riots of 1910 and how life was like at the turn of the last century in the South Wales valleys.

The 80 page pack is an excellent resource for pupils who are studying the massive social and industrial upheavals of the early 20th century in the Rhondda, as well as those concentrating on the events of the Cambrian Combine dispute of 1910.

Created by local historians Gwyn Evans and David Maddox, the resource packs are already receiving wide acclaim in local schools.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism Cllr Robert Bevan said: “Tonypandy 2010 was a widespread project to commemorate the centenary of the Tonypandy Riots and allowed local schoolchildren and students the opportunity to learn more about the Cambrian Colliery Dispute.

“The resource packs compiled by Tonypandy Community College, with the support of David Maddox and Gwyn Evans are exemplary and will prove an asset for schools throughout the county borough in their research work about life in the industrial heartland of the Rhondda during the early part of the last century.”
