Council pulls out stops to keep people warm

Swansea Council staff have been pulling out all the stops to help keep people warm as the cold snap continues to bite this week.

Figures show workers from the Council’s Corporate Building Services team dealt with 142 emergency call-out requests across the city on Monday (December 20) between 8am and midnight. The statistics show 44 of the call-outs were gas heating related.

The figures for Tuesday (December 21) also show staff were rushed off their feet. Staff dealt with 109 emergency call-out requests – 51 of which were gas heating related.

Staff dealt with 104 emergency call-outs yesterday (December 22) – 52 of which were gas and heating related.

Temperatures have regularly dropped below zero so far this week as the build-up to Christmas continues in the snow and ice.

Frozen pipes and leaks are among the other emergencies Council experts have been dealing with at Council homes across the city.

Hywel Thomas, Operations Group Leader in Corporate Building Services, said: “It’s certainly been all hands to the pump this week because of the cold snap but I’m delighted we’ve been able to respond so effectively to all emergency call-out requests despite the large volume of calls.

“It’s comforting to know we’re helping people to keep warm and have addressed so many problems in the build-up to Christmas. Our emergency team will also be on hand to help throughout the Christmas and New Year holidays.”
