Theatr Mwldan’s Film Festival gets underway in Cardigan on Thursday 13 January and continues every day for the following 14 days.
This year’s Festival is Theatr Mwldan’s 17th annual celebration of cinema and the moving image, and showcases a wide selection of the very best in recent films from around the world.
Films from Wales feature strongly in the programme. There is a special advance preview screening of Marc Evans’ new film Patagonia, giving Cardigan audiences the chance to see the film well before it goes on general release in the rest of the UK. Patagonia, which stars Matthew Rhys, Nia Roberts and Duffy (in her first film appearance), tells of the intertwined relationship of Wales and Patagonia as two couples make life-changing journeys in each country. Patagonia’s Director Marc Evans will be attending the preview screening in Cardigan on Saturday 22 January, and will answer questions from the audience after the film.
The Festival also features screenings of Martha Jac a Sianco, the BAFTA Cymru winning film adaptation of Caryl Lewis’ prize-winning novel set in Ceredigion. The book was given a rapturous welcome when it was first published in 2004, and went on to win the prestigious Welsh Book of the Year award, the Welsh publishing industry’s principal prize, in 2005. Caryl Lewis adapted her novel for the screen, and the film was shot almost entirely on location at Cribor Fawr, Pont-sian, near Talgarreg in rural Ceredigion. Caryl Lewis will be attending the screenings of Martha Jac a Sianco on Satuday 15 and Sunday 16 January to answer audience questions after the film.
Elsewhere in the Festival, there’s an exciting line-up of high quality contenders for the 2011 BAFTAs and Oscars, such as 127 Hours, Secretariat and the hotly-tipped The King’s Speech starring Colin Firth, plus some fascinating documentaries like Into Eternity, The First Movie and Out Of The Ashes.
This year’s Festival programme also includes live broadcasts of the National Theatre’s acclaimed award-winning musical Fela! direct from the Olivier Theatre in London, and Mwldan’s first ever live broadcast ballet – The Royal Ballet’s Giselle direct from London’s Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
Music fans can sit back and enjoy a brand new documentary about musician David Byrne (former frontman of the band Talking Heads), followed by a live satellite question and answer session with the man himself!
All in all, there is so much to enjoy in this year’s Festival. Big films, little films, local films, and films from far away, Mwldan has organised a fantastic line up of titles ready for you to indulge in a brilliant fortnight of cinema!
