Welsh Conservatives will call for investment in a number of different renewable forms of energy during the group’s Opposition Debate on Wednesday January 12th.
Labour-Plaid’s focus has been primarily on wind and the government recently missed its renewable energy target for 2010.
Shadow Minister for Environment, Angela Burns AM, said: “The Welsh government’s approach to renewable energy has been a shambles.
“The planning process for the development of wind farms has been flawed, too much emphasis has been placed on wind energy, and the resulting failure to meet a crucial target is the usual predictable mess.
“This is typical of Labour-Plaid’s tunnel vision.
“It is essential that we develop a full range of energy sources fit to meet the demands of a greener economy. We shouldn’t be putting all our eggs in one basket; that approach has already proved inadequate. Instead, Welsh Conservatives would invest in a variety of renewable energy forms.
“Wind is longer the only viable option to provide the bulk of our energy needs and we need a new, fresh and balanced approach. This must include biomass, hydro, wave, tidal, solar, biogas, heat pumps and microgeneration.
“Wales has the potential to become a major player in the emerging green economy. If we are ever going to meet that potential however, we need to support and promote all forms of renewable energy.
“Climate change is one of the biggest environmental, economic and social challenges we face. Right now, we’re losing the battle in Wales. That will continue until we take a fresh approach and show more ambition.”
