Welsh Conservatives will begin a new term in the National Assembly by pledging a coherent, costed and clear alternative to Labour-Plaid in a programme for government in 2011.
As the only progressive centre-right party in Wales, the Welsh Conservatives have great opportunities in the year ahead asserts Nick Bourne AM, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly.
The Party has a challenging six months ahead with two referendums, the UK Spring Forum at the Welsh Conservative Party conference and the opportunity to bring change to Wales at the Assembly elections.
Nick Bourne said, “In 2011 Welsh Conservatives will be continuing to uphold our record as the hardest working group in the Assembly, scrutinising the Labour-Plaid Government and finalising an ambitious set of policies to improve the quality of life for the people of Wales.
“We will be campaigning across Wales in referendum campaigns, both of which propose radical changes to the way in which Wales is governed.
“In March, Conservatives from across the UK will be lending their support to our Assembly election campaign by attending the Spring Forum and Welsh Conservative conference in Cardiff.
“Welsh Conservatives have travelled a long way since the start of devolution in 1999 and have increased our representation at every election. This year we face one of our greatest electoral tests, but one which is vital to the future of Wales’ economy, public services and quality of life.
“Over the coming weeks, Welsh Conservative candidates and supporters will be on the streets of Wales advocating our key promises of protecting the NHS from Labour-Plaid cuts, reducing the burden on small businesses, improving educational standards and protecting Wales’ beautiful natural environment.
“This is a progressive agenda for a proud nation, but one which could do so much better. Recent figures have shown how Wales is lagging further behind other parts of the UK in educational standards and how Wales remains the poorest part of the UK.
“As Welsh Conservatives we will pledge to serve the people of Wales and deliver the change that Wales needs in 2011.”
